No. 8 Dowling Catholic hadn't won a state championship in softball since 2004, but Claudia Farrell, Meaghan McCarthy and the rest of the Maroons weren't going to let that drought continue. The Maroons used clutch hitting and pitching to take down No. 7 Johnston in a thrilling contest.
Farrell struggled with her command at different points in the game, particularly early on. She issued 7 walks, and worked her way out of multiple jams. Four Dragon runners were stranded in scoring position in the first three innings. But Farrell buckled down when it counted and struck out 9.
The Maroon offense feasted, throughout the tournament, on 2-out rallies and the championship game was no different. Dowling scored all 5 of its runs with 2 outs, and in their three tournament contests, the Maroons scored 18 of their 27 runs with 2 outs.
Leading the way were McCarthy and Jessica Bastian. McCarthy's 2-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning provided solid insurance for Farrell to finish off the Dragons, and Bastian went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Bastian, Kaila Konz, Alicia Crivaro and Farrell were all named to the Class 5A all-tournament, of which Farrell was chosen as captain.
