2013 Iowa Sports Spotlight Iowa High School All-State Softball Teams


DES MOINES, Iowa - Listed below are those named to the Iowa Sports Spotlight 2013 Iowa High School All-State Softball teams. Also listed in each of the five classes are those named the Player, Pitcher and Coach of the Year. The selections were made prior to the post season and includes only regular season play.



2013 Iowa Sports Spotlight Iowa High School All-State Softball Teams

In Class 5A, Kendyl Lindaman of Ankeny is recognized as the Player of the Year. Only a freshman, Lindaman is already making her mark  in Iowa high school softball history. This past regular season Lindaman hit a state-high 23 home runs to go along with 16 doubles and drove in 57 runs despite being walked a 5A high of 39 times this season. Kendyl hit at a .525 clip and posted a slugging percentage of 1.221.

The Pitcher of the Year goes to Alyssa Olson of Cedar Rapids Jefferson who posted a 19-3 record with a 0.99 E.R.A. with 216 strikeouts in 143 inning of work, holding opponents to a .161 batting average.

The Coach of the Year honors go to Todd Merical of Johnston who helped a young squad mature into a state qualifier. The Dragons won 17 of their last 18 games in route to their ticket to Fort Dodge.

In Class 4A, the Player of the Year is Karly Olson of Winterset. Olson batted .374 with 5 home run and 28 RBI’s. Her biggest presence was in the circle where she posted a 30-8 record in 250-plus innings of work, striking out 311 with only 147 hits against and an E.R.A of 1.06.

The Pitcher of the Year is Paige Lowary of Dallas Center-Grimes. Lowary had a 24-2 regular season and in 170 innings set down 228 batters on strikes. Paige allowed just 28 runs and 72 hits to post an E.R.A of 1.15 while facing the best competition the state had to offer.

The Coach of the Year honors go to Andy Pals of Norwalk. The Warriors were under the radar in a very good class this season and finished just short of the trip to Fort Dodge with a 36-4 record with two of those losses to defending 4A champion, Indianola.

In Class 3A, the Player of the Year goes to Miles Ludwigs of Sergeant Bluff-Luton who carried most of the burden in the circle with starts and an 18-2 record and a 1.72 E.R.A in nearly 199 innings of work. Miles also helped her own and teams cause at the plate with her batting average (.537) which was fourth in the class, doubles (20), tops in 3A, and fourth in home runs (9) and RBI’s (47).

The Pitcher of the Year is Libby Bemis of Clarke (Osceola) who posted a 17-6 record with an E.R.A 1.19 with 198 strikeouts in 141-plus innings. Bemis allowed just 24 earned runs  this season.

The Coach of the Year honors Jack Seelhammer of New Hampton who found their best rhythm down the stretch, winning 14 straight to complete 27-9 record into the 3A field in Fort Dodge.

In Class 2A, the Player of the Year is Kelsey Lough of Jesup who carried the pitching load for the 2A state qualifiers, posting 26-10 record, 1.43 E.R.A while allowing 45 earned runs in 220 innings with 249 strikeouts. Lough was also solid with her bat, hitting .388 with 13 doubles, 6 home runs and 37 RBI’s.

The Pitcher of the Year is Madison Keysor of Treynor who posted a 25-3 record with an earned run average of just 0.,94 in 186 inning of work. Keysor allowed 25 earned runs on 111 hits while striking out 297 batters.

The Coach of the Year honors goes to Steve Hopkins of Durant whos team continued to reache for their preseason expectations with games against tough competition throughout the season which led to another state tournament bid and eventual state title.

In Class 1A, the Player of the Year is Nicole Shutt of Martensdale-St. Marys who reached base 2 out of every three times to the plate and at or near the top in many of the hitting categories in 1A including batting average (.667), hits (66), doubles (11) and RBI’s (56) while also stealing 28 bases in 29 attempts.

The Pitcher of the Year is Kayla Tindall of Akron-Westfield who was nearly unscored upon this season. Tindall allowed just 4 earned runs in 145 innings and posted a 24-2 season record and an E.R.A of 0.19 while striking out 206 batters and walking just 12.

The Coach of the Year Honors go to Duane Blint and Paula Bliven of New London who had a few bumps in the road this season but found themselves playing the best softball down the stretch for a trip to Fort Dodge.
